Applying Kirchhoff’s second law for closed loop ABDA,
Applying Kirchhoff’s second law for closed loop BCDB ,
The values of P, Q, R, S are adjusted such that becomes zero. At this stage the bridge is set to be in balance condition.
i.e., In balanced condition of bridge IG = 0
In balanced condition the above equations respectively become

I₁P=I₂R …..(3)
I₃Q =I₄ S …..(4)
